Donegal Tweed

What is Donegal Tweed?

Donegal Tweed is one of Ireland’s most distinctive textiles, traditionally woven in County Donegal. Known for its colourful flecks and durable wool weave, authentic Donegal tweed reflects centuries of Irish craftsmanship.

Our Donegal Tweed is woven in County Donegal by expert craftspeople using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations. Each fabric reflects the rugged beauty of the Irish landscape, with unique flecks of colour woven into durable, high-quality cloth.

As part of the upcoming European PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certification, genuine Donegal Tweed must be produced within Donegal — ensuring the fabric you purchase here is truly authentic.

Our tweed is:

  • Sold by the metre

  • 150 cm wide

  • 100% pure new wool

  • Shipped worldwide from Donegal Town

The History of Donegal Tweed

Donegal Tweed has been woven in the northwest of Ireland for centuries. Traditionally produced in rural homes and small weaving workshops, the fabric was originally made from locally spun wool and designed to withstand the harsh Atlantic climate.

The distinctive flecked yarns used in Donegal Tweed reflect the colours of the surrounding landscape — heather, moss, stone and sea. These coloured flecks, often called “neps,” give Donegal Tweed its recognisable texture and depth.

During the twentieth century the fabric became internationally known as one of Ireland’s most distinctive textiles and continues to be woven in Donegal today.

What Makes Donegal Tweed Unique

Authentic Donegal Tweed is recognised by several distinctive features:

• colourful flecks woven into the yarn
• textured wool fabric with natural character
• colours inspired by the Donegal landscape
• durable cloth ideal for tailoring and outerwear

Unlike many modern fabrics, traditional Donegal Tweed is produced in small quantities, preserving the craft traditions that make it so distinctive.

Donegal Tweed Today

Today Donegal Tweed continues to be woven by skilled craftspeople and weaving mills throughout the county.

Interest in heritage textiles has grown internationally, and Donegal Tweed is increasingly recognised as an important part of Ireland’s cultural and craft heritage.

With the upcoming Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, the name “Donegal Tweed” will be protected so that only tweed woven in Donegal can carry the designation.

This ensures authenticity for customers around the world.
